Check and adjustment of gaps of valves

Adjustment of valvate gaps is made on the cold engine!

Petrol engine

Implementation of this procedure will require special tools which can be acquired in service centers of the Toyota company, company shops of automobile accessories and in the wholesale markets.


If gaps in the valvate drive are big, valves will enough not open. The drive will be noisy and the engine will badly pull as there will be an incomplete filling of cylinders working mix. Final valves will open insufficiently for ventilation of cylinders, the remained pressure of gases will interfere with receipt of a new charge of mix in the cylinder. If gaps are too small, inlet and final valves will densely not saddle when closing. It will worsen the heat sink from heated valves to a head. Thanks to it the engine will also lose draft (there will be a leak of gases), valves will overheat and burn through.

Adjustment of gaps in the valvate drive is made by selection of adjusting washers of a certain thickness which are established in pushers of valves. At production the drive of valves has some dispersion within admissions therefore at adjustment of gaps it is required to establish the washers which are a little differing in thickness from each other. The Toyota company releases repair washers of different thickness with a step of 0.02 mm. For carrying out the correct adjustment of gaps in the valvate drive necessary adjusting washers can be got from the dealer of the Toyota company.

For holding this procedure the specialized Toyota tools are required. For push-up of a pusher to receive a sufficient gap for replacement of a washer (at the same time the valvate spring contracts) the tool similar to big flares is used. The rychazhok, the established vraspor between a pusher and the camshaft is applied to fixing of a pusher in this situation. To removal of a washer use the magnetic tool, to exact measurement of its thickness – a micrometer. It is not recommended to carry out adjustment of a gap if there are no such tools.

Adjustment of valves, certainly, has to be it is carried out as it is possible more precisely, however, if there is no other opportunity, it is better to leave a gap in the drive slightly increased, than "pressed" as in the latter case valves can burn through. It is better to have a little noisy engine, than faulty.

Check

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Disconnect a negative wire from the battery.

If the stereosystem established on the car is equipped with a security code before disconnecting the battery make sure that you have the correct combination for input of the audio system in action!

2. Empty the cooling system.
3. Disconnect coils from spark plugs and remove the other components preventing removal of a cover of a head of cylinders.
4. Blow candle niches and turn out spark plugs (see the Section Check of a State and Replacement of Spark Plugs (petrol engines)).

When using compressed air do not forget to put on goggles!

5. Uncover (also) head(s) of cylinders (see the Head Dvigatel).
6. Bring the piston of the first cylinder into the provision of VMT of the end of a step of compression (see the Head Dvigatel).
7. By means of probes of lezviyny type perform measurement of gaps of the valves specified on an accompanying illustration.
8. Turn a bent shaft on one whole revolution in the normal direction and perform measurement of gaps of the remained valves (address an accompanying illustration).

Adjustment

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Having finished measurements, compare them to requirements of Specifications.
2. On the engine 2UZ-FE remove the camshaft (see the corresponding part of the Head Dvigatel).
3. By means of a micrometer measure thickness of the taken adjusting washer. Make the following calculations for determination of thickness of a new washer:
N = T + (AND – V)
Where:
T = Thickness of an old adjusting washer
And = Size of the measured gap
V = The required size of a valvate gap
N = The required thickness of a new adjusting washer (see Specifications).
4. Pick up a new adjusting washer of thickness allowing to bring closer as much as possible precisely a valvate gap to the required value. Adjusting washers of 41 standard size in the range from 2.000 to 2.800 mm (No. No. from 00 to 80) with a step of 0.020 mm are issued.

In certain cases the old washer removed from a pusher of one valve can be suitable for installation on a pusher another, needing adjustment, the valve, do not hurry to get replaceable washers.

5. Establish the picked-up adjusting washer on a pusher. By means of the measuring probe of the corresponding thickness make sure of correctness of the made adjustment.
6. Working in a similar manner, make adjustment of all valves with the broken gap.
7. Establish to the place of a spark plug, a cover (and) head(s) of cylinders, protective covers, an arm of a cable of an accelerator and other, acting for the purpose of ensuring access, components.

Diesel engine

Check

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Remove air ducts and a cover of a head of cylinders.
2. Transfer the piston of the first cylinder to VMT. For this purpose, rotating a bent shaft clockwise, combine adjusting tags (address an accompanying illustration). At the same time cams of the drive of valves of the first cylinder have to be turned up, otherwise turn a bent shaft on one turn. Make sure that yokes of valves of the first cylinder are free, and yokes of valves of the cylinder No. 6 are tightened.
3. Measure a gap between the adjusting screw of a yoke of the valves specified on an accompanying illustration and the valve drive lever.
4. Turn a bent shaft on one turn and measure a gap on other valves.
5. Compare results of measurements to requirements of Specifications and if necessary adjust valvate gaps.

Adjustment

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

1. Weaken a lock-nut on the lever of the drive of the valve (1) and turn out the adjusting screw (2) so that the last and a core of the valve were completely disconnected (address an accompanying illustration).

At the same time hold the lever of the drive of valves an adjustable spanner.

2. Weaken a lock-nut the adjusting screw on a yoke.
3. Insert the probe of lezviyny type between the adjusting screw on a yoke and the lever of the drive of valves. For Inlet valves use the probe 0.20 mm thick, and for final – 0.50 mm thick.
4. Turn the adjusting screw in a yoke until when moving the probe the small resistance then fix the adjusting screw a lock-nut is not felt (address an accompanying illustration).
5. At the inserted probe check that resistance to its movement does not change when weakening the adjusting screw on the lever of the drive of valves. Otherwise return to paragraph 2.
6. Tighten the adjusting screw on the lever of the drive of valves and record it a lock-nut when resistance of the probe amplifies.

At the same time hold the lever of the drive of valves an adjustable spanner.

7. Weaken a lock-nut on a yoke.
8. Move the adjusting screw until the probe begins to move with very small resistance then fix the adjusting screw a lock-nut.
9. Establish a cover of a head of cylinders and earlier dismantled details.
